2025 We are pleased to announce that Action of Positive and Negative (1952), a seminal work by Nikolai Kasak, has been acquired as part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

This important construction-executed in primary colors and with an irregular form-stands as one of the most significant works from this period in Kasak's career. It embodies the core principles of the artist's manifesto on irregular formats, a radical stance he began developing around 1945-46. In his own words (from On Art and Related Manners), Kasak outlined four foundational ideas: 1- Freedom from the limitations of the traditional rectangular, bidimensional frame. 2- Integration of painting and sculpture, rejecting their separation as distinct disciplines. 3-Use of both Negative and Positive Space Energies as structural and final elements of the work. 4- Assertion that a work of art is an autonomous, self-active reality-a physical invention, not an imitation or representation.

This pivotal piece was also published in Arte Madí Universal, nos. 7/8, Buenos Aires, June 1954, affirming its resonance within the avant-garde dialogues of the time. Kasak's connection with the Madí movement-founded in 1946 by Gyula Kosice, Rhod Rothfuss, and Carmelo Arden Quin— further situates this work within a broader, transnational trajectory of geometric abstraction and concrete art.

Madi artists sought to reflect the vitality of modern life through playful yet rigorous explorations of form, often utilizing irregular supports and incorporating three-dimensional elements. Their journal, Arte Madí Universal, was a vital platform for international exchange and would later influence the development of Neo-Concrete art in Brazil.

We are honored to see this historic work enter the collection of such a prestigious institution, where it will contribute to ongoing conversations about abstraction, form, and modernism in the Americas.

2024 Nikolai Kasak’s “The Grate” (1946–47) joins the Collection of El Moderno. We are pleased to announce that The Grate (1946–1947), a seminal work by Belarusian-American artist Nikolai Kasak, is now officially part of the permanent collection of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires.

This historic inclusion honors a heartfelt wish first expressed in 1967 by the artist’s wife, Janina Kasak, who hoped the work would one day reside in an Argentine public collection. In a letter dated October 30, 1967, Kasak wrote to his friend Gyula Kosice, requesting that the work be donated in Janina’s name to El Moderno. Though the gift was not realized at the time, over five decades later, art historian Cristina Rossi uncovered the letter in Kosice’s archive at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) in New York.

2018 We are proud to announce that the work Rythmical Action of Positive and Negative on Vertical Axes – Whites (1948–1952) by Nikolai Kasak is now part of the permanent collection of the Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin.

This important construction is a seminal example of Kasak’s mature work, in which we can clearly observe the embodiment of the core principles outlined in his artistic manifesto. With its refined interplay of positive and negative forms along a vertical axis and its restrained monochromatic palette, the piece captures Kasak’s bold vision of spatial dynamism and his commitment to breaking with traditional rectangular formats.

The acquisition by the Blanton Museum—one of the leading university art museums in the United States—marks a significant milestone in the institutional recognition of Kasak’s contribution to postwar abstraction and constructive art.
